SSM Health – St. Mary’s Hospital Emergency Department

Make facilities updates to become a Level II Trauma Center

In order to become a Level II Trauma Center, St. Mary’s needed to renovate the Emergency Department registration desk and waiting area. A trauma room was also added to receive new volumes of higher acuity patients.

In an effort to increase overall security for the registration desk and waiting area in the Emergency Department, EUA met with the staff to understand their process and flow of welcoming and registering patients. Upon entry, the security desk is now immediately visible with the reception desk following. The registration desk was designed with side windows allowing the receptionists to see approaching patients. Security has full view of the entrance and waiting area.

Beyond the waiting area renovations, St. Mary’s added a trauma room in the Emergency Department. Existing exam rooms were renovated to fit three trauma bays with the flexibility for privacy for each patient. Due to the low structure and existing conditions, there we many challenges to overcome in order to achieve high ceilings in the trauma room. Additionally, EUA needed to
re-engineer the facility life safety plan to fit the renovations into the Emergency Department. These renovations among other EUA projects allowed St. Mary’s to get the Level II Trauma Center designation.
