A transformed gym creates a new dual-purpose library and cafeteria to optimize space
Raymond School was experiencing significant facility issues and a lack of space that was being temporarily resolved through the use of mobile classrooms. EUA performed a facilities study, educational adequacy assessment and master plan, in addition to providing the district with support to encourage community participation and dialogue.
The final solution supported by the community involved repurposing the existing gym into a library, dual purpose cafeteria and group meeting area that optimized space use throughout the day. The design team also brightened the space through the addition of clerestory windows along the exterior of the building structure and transferred the daylighting inside the building through windows into the hallway. The design solutions focus on acoustic reduction including floating ceilings, wall panels and rubber floors. Flexible caster-based furniture allows the teachers and students to easily adjust their space for future needs.
