Milwaukee Public Schools - Frederick J. Gaenslen Library
Transforming interior space to create inclusivity + flexibility for all students
Frederick Gaenslen Elementary School has been awarded a grant to use towards modifying the elementary school’s library. EUA is working with the client to design a vibrant and tactile experience making the library accessible / user-friendly for all students, including visually-impaired and handicapped students.
Each area of the library will consist of four themes, creating unique learning experiences: the Reading Forest, Storyteller’s Circle, Reading Boat and Teen Zone. In addition, the client requested bark material to be wrapped around the structural columns to represent birch trees and a canoe made out of birch-wood.
The goal of the project is to develop inclusivity, functionality and reflect the natural world. To execute the client’s vision, EUA worked with First Nations to properly incorporate Native American culture within the space.
