Johnson Controls – Hawley Road

Architecture that unites different work styles and celebrates building materials from different eras, bringing together old and new

Johnson Controls’ new corporate office space within a repurposed 1940’s Allis Chalmers manufacturing plant houses a special projects community. Their need for an elegant, modern work environment, harmonious with the industrial qualities of the existing building, and high-priority occupancy schedule required an extremely fast-track approach and renovation: programming, design, documentation, and construction occurred as a single phase within a span of only six-and-a-half months.

To support continual fluctuations of occupants and space needs, the office features highly collaborative, flexible workspaces and eliminates private offices to encourage non-hierarchical knowledge sharing. The transformed space unites people from different work and collaboration styles and celebrates building materials from different eras, unifying the old and the new.

At the heart of the space, an expansive, two-story central gathering area is capable of accommodating the entire staff for all-hands meetings and social events. The opening carved between the two floors features a monumental stairway, a branded community cafe, and a two-story video display wall.
