John R. Moses VA Skilled Nursing Facility
Design that supports those who served
EUA worked with the State of Wisconsin and the US Department of Veterans Affairs to design a new 192-bed skilled nursing facility for the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. The unique building layout balances a home-like resident experience, resident views of Rainbow Lake, and staffing efficiencies. Residents live in neighborhoods of 24, sharing a kitchen, dining room, and screened porch to promote social interaction; each household of 12 also has a dedicated living room.
The team worked with an environmental gerontologist and multiple client-side stakeholders to determine the appropriate number of residents per household, explore how staff moves between households on various shifts, and maximize efficiency of the building layout. The building is also connected via tunnel system to the other buildings on the King campus, facilitating access to other campus support, health services and social spaces. In addition to beautifully landscaped gardens, a generous physical therapy suite, and barber/beauty shop, the new building also includes a large member community room where all residents can gather together for notable events.
