Balancing program needs with the established budget
Combining four Madison-area locations, Ho-Chunk Nation’s new 11,000 sq ft branch office reflects the culture and heritage of the community through a flexible space, accommodating various ages and programs.
Providing a secure environment for children and after-school activities, the community center includes a gym, playground and multi-purpose classrooms with controlled access. Consolidating operations, a business area expresses a predominant space for reception and administrative work. A community room features a fire pit, strategically placed on the east side to correspond with spiritual practices.
Complying with tribal practices, the building orientation corresponds with the four cardinal directions. An outdoor gathering space, used for a daily flag-raising ceremony, is defined by a walking path for ease of use. Columns on the exterior resemble area trees while natural materials like brick, precast and wood-grain siding further infuse a connection to nature and the surrounding community.
