Denver Public Schools – McAuliffe at Smiley Middle School Drama Classroom

Transform office + storage space into a flexible + dynamic drama classroom to increase enthusiasm

Teachers from Smiley Middle School had toured several schools in New York City and were inspired by the drama facilities they saw. To give their program the same feeling of formality and to improve flexibility, staff applied for and received an Innovative Classrooms grant from Denver Public Schools to convert four offices and a storage area into a large classroom and teacher prep space. Adjacent to the backstage of the auditorium, the new space provides room for set design, dressing areas, a practice space with a wall full of mirrors, as well as a designated teacher prep area. In addition to meeting the District’s needs, the space gives the theater program a feeling of validity and the students and teachers involved a renewed sense of excitement.

This project began as a joint venture between Form + Works and EUA, and was completed as an EUA project, conquering a condensed scheduled within occupied space. To maximize space and sustainability, the team restored the original wood floors and plaster ceiling elements.
