DeForest Area School District – Harvest Intermediate

Design a welcoming, transparent + daylight-filled space for students

Facing significant projected enrollment growth and increasing capital maintenance costs, the DeForest Area School District and EUA worked with the community to successfully pass a referendum allowing the construction of a new intermediate school.

The new school holds grades 4 - 6 and is located on an old farm field, adjacent to a creek. The school integrates with the site through outdoor learning areas, natural daylight and views to the outside.

With the need for transparency, glass and open learning areas fill the school allowing for easy viewing from one classroom to the next. Grade neighborhoods have classrooms, small and large gathering areas and sensory spaces for students to use throughout the day. Small adjacent rooms were included in the design to allow student support services to happen within the neighborhoods, helping the students still feel integrated with their classrooms, while receiving the support they need.
