Camp One Step and Shining Stars Foundation Provide Enrichment Opportunities

MILWAUKEE, WI, + DENVER, CO, December 13th, 2021 — Rich Tennessen (CEO), Kristin Dufek (President), Heather Hall-Maison (Senior Accountant), Jody Ventura (Executive Administrator), Ryan Wallace (Denver Studio Director) and Brittany Hayward (EUA Ambassador) from Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) had the privilege of awarding proceeds from the 16th annual Beyond Design Bike Tour to two local charities.

Although EUA was not able to host the annual Beyond Design Bike Tour in-person, over $40,350 was raised through generous sponsor donations and online silent auction held from August 23rd – 26th 2021. The selected charities Camp One Step and Shining Stars Foundation support children and their families in the fight against childhood cancer.

For over 40 years Camp One Step has provided camp program opportunities for children who have been diagnosed with cancer so they can meet, connect, find community and support with their peers outside a hospital setting. Camp One Step's mission is to bring back the joy of childhood that cancer took away. At camp, kids can be kids, meet others going through similar challenges, find hope and support, reclaim their joy, and find themselves again. About half of their in-person programs are held at sites located in Wisconsin. EUA’s contributions will support a 2022 winter camp as well as Camp One Step’s next episode of their podcast series called “No One Understands,” airing Thursday, December 16th.

According to Katie Weil, Camp One Step Vice President, Philanthropy said, “the average cost to send a child to a virtual program is $500, and the average cost to send a child to a week of in-person programming begins at $1,000. With that, your gift will help send dozens of children to our programs in the near future. We thank everyone with EUA and the Eppstein Uhen Foundation for your incredible support, which will help bring so much joy, connections, and hope to the amazing children and families that we are honored to serve.”

The Shining Stars Foundation provides year-round recreational and social programs for children and their families challenged with pediatric cancer or life-threatening illnesses. They provide programs that help children move past just trying to survive, to thriving and truly living again. The organization serves not only the child, but their entire immediate family, including siblings and parents. Annually, 60+ outdoor, social, and recreational experiences are provided in the Colorado area including adaptive skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, rafting, biking, cooking, swimming, climbing, sailing and so much more. These programs provide long-term, year-round care for children and their families through recreational programming at any stage in their cancer battle, including treatment, relapse, or remission.

Mackenzie Brenneman, Shining Stars Foundation Director of Programs and Events said, “We are so grateful for the support and kindness from EUA, it will help change the lives of many children facing pediatric cancer!”

EUA has supported many charities since the inception of the bike ride and is excited to host the 17th Annual Beyond Design Bike Tour in-person on August 25th, 2022 to continue to raise money in support of Camp One Step and Shining Stars Foundation in the fight against childhood cancer.
