The Oconomowoc School Board Monday unanimously approved the schematic design for the expansion and renovation of Ixonia Elementary School, a first step in planning the project.
Superintendent Roger Rindo said he expected ground to be broken for new construction sometime in May, so pupils can see the start of work before the school year ends.
"We want this building to be a hub, a gathering place for Ixonia," he said.
Work planned for the school includes four new classrooms, a new cafeteria, new office space, and replacement of heating, ventilation and mechanical systems.
The superintendent introduced several teachers and administrators who participated in helping plan the inside of the renovated school.
"It was fun to be part of, and very educational," said first grade teacher Traci Timm, who added that architects and district officials "really did listen to us. It wasn't just pretend input."
Rindo called organizing a new school layout "a once in a career opportunity" for teachers, staff and administrators.
Principal Stacy Yearling said the planning exercise "has been incredibly engaging for our staff."
