Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corp. renovated and modernized its downtown Milwaukee office recently to help make the company a stronger competitor in a tight labor market. Check out the attached slideshow to get your first look inside the office.
The company worked with Eppstein Uhen Architects and Hunzinger Construction to update 200,000 square feet of its interior. MGIC (NYSE: MTG), 270 E. Kilbourn Ave., was founded in 1957 and sells private mortgage insurance. As of June 30, the company had $200.7 billion of primary insurance in force, according MGIC.
Its office houses about 800 employees.
“We’re in a 1973 building and still looked like it,” said Kurt Thomas, MGIC’s senior vice president and chief human resources officer.
He said the company began talking about a renovation – or possibly a relocation – around 2013. MGIC decided its best move was to stay put and update the space to improve the work environment.
The facelift created an open-office environment that increased natural light and brought in new amenities, Thomas said. MGIC also updated its technology to enable options such as video conferencing.
“We work differently now,” he said. “We have a more collaborative work space.”
The facility now also has more consistent heating and cooling, Thomas said. In addition, all employees now have electric-powered stand-up desks that they can adjust.
“That was important, to get comfort for our employees,” Thomas said.
The renovations affected three floors of the four-story headquarters building and eight floors of the 10-story tower. The work was completed in eight phases of construction.
“We already know from our engagement survey and feedback that employees are thrilled,” Thomas said. “It was so palpable. People couldn’t wait for their floor to get done.”
