Blurring the boundaries: incorporating outdoor space in memory care settings
EUA has worked extensively with memory care providers; we have experience with freestanding communities and memory care as a component of a campus continuum of care. Our project experience ranges from 8- to 16-resident households.
One important aspect of memory care that is often overlooked is access to comfortable, all-season outdoor space. At EUA, we work with our clients by including their activity programs into outdoor design features in order to extend useful time of each outdoor space. The design features encourage use of the space during summer months (shading and seating) and during the winter months (radiant heating and protection from the elements). Outdoors spaces with associated indoor social spaces are the most utilized (inside looking out, outside under shelter, outside under shade, outside in full sun).
