NAWIC’s Block Kids Building Competition

Held at UWM’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, the annual National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Block Kids event introduces children in grades K5-6th to the construction industry. EUA’s Project Architect Christine Krueger attended as a judge, mentor and industry expert. She explained, “I enjoyed experiencing the children’s enthusiasm and imagination at this event. Having an outlet for them to explore possibilities within this industry promotes learning and helps them set goals for their futures.”

Since launching the program more than 300,000 children have participated. The objective is for each participant to construct a project using the provided Legos and their choice of three additional materials: rocks, string, foil or construction paper. The first-place winner built a construction crane, as he wants to be a crane operator when he grows up.  The judges appreciated his attention to detail and the continuity between his project and goals for his future.
